Ms. Sullivan, I Would Like a Word...

“Bitch, get it together bitch.”

The words echoed the first time I gave the incomparable songstress Jazmine Sullivan's latest EP Heaux Tales a listen. From the first track, I knew I was in for a ride, and what a ride it was. First of all, I can’t believe this is only an EP, secondly, can you say SNAPT, third of all, refer back to exhibit A. This body of work is so thoughtful, so timely, and so sonic. You can definitely hear the influence of trap music and female emcees in this work. Jazmine delivers lyrics like a skilled rapper while singing her entire face off! This EP sounds like a jaded and self-assured follow-up to her last album Reality Show and I am here For IT!

What really blew me away is the concept of this album. It’s an exploration of womanhood and sexuality, and it rings especially true for those in their late twenties/early 30s like myself. The interludes were raw and truthful. They said the things you think and tell your story or someone you know. “We’re out here telling them that the pvssy is theirs when in actuality its ours.” That last line in Antoinette’s tale hit me hard. It took me back to a time, a younger me getting it in, in my quaint basement apartment. In the throes of passion, I was asked the famous question, Whose 🐱 is it, and my honest to God thought was “mine.” But being young, naive, and lacking the confidence to speak my mind, I conjured up the nerve to say “yours.” Performing to pacify a man who wasn’t paying na bill, put na ring on my finger, and was getting the cutty in MY house. Why do women do things we don’t want to? I don’t know, but I’m glad we’re having these conversations.

Fan Favorite

The whole tape is a vibe, but if I had to pick my current favorite song, I would have to say “Put It Down.”

Hey, the lyrics are toxic, but its the way she rode the beat for me!

This EP is damn near perfect. It explores sexuality in all dimensions. Whether you’re feeling like a bad bitch, sad bitch, rad bitch, or all of the above there is a song you can relate to. We can only hope that the visuals are on the way!
